Amerjit Chohan joins More Partnership

18 October 2023

We are thrilled to continue to expand our team with the appointment of seasoned charity leader, Amerjit Chohan, as Partner. Formerly CEO at St George’s Hospital Charity, and with 30 years of experience growing health charities and their income, Amerjit will strengthen our commitment to advancing great ambitions of health organisations, and in particular NHS charities.

During his five-year tenure at St George’s, Amerjit grew a small start-up charity with little awareness and fundraising into a team of over 30 people, raising seven-figure gifts and ranked the 11th most loved charity brand in the UK. He achieved this through a focus on vision and mission for the charity, brand building internally and externally, and a strategic approach to fundraising. Amerjit understands the value of brand awareness and comms, and the impact this can have on growing a successful organisation.

Through this experience, Amerjit brings to More exceptional knowledge of how to establish strong relationships between an NHS Charity and its Hospital Trust, and how to secure buy-in from executive directors, clinical teams, capital and estates teams, and the Trust’s communications functions. Under his leadership, St George’s Hospital Charity launched its first ever capital appeal in 2022 – the £5m Children’s Appeal – for which half has already been raised or pledged.

Throughout his career as Director of Fundraising at a range of hospital and health charities, including Imperial Health Charity, Smile Train and Depaul UK, Amerjit has been successful in designing and implementing strategies for all types of fundraising. He secured over £1m of “grateful patient” donations, built corporate partnerships with companies such as Tetley, Thorntons and Group M, developed regular and legacy giving programmes, managed Trust and Foundation funding applications and delivered high-profile celebrity events and gala dinners. He understands where and how to focus the energy and skills of teams for the best possible results.

Another strength that Amerjit brings to More is his expertise in grant-making, ensuring funds raised are utilised effectively and lead to positive and visible impact, that will improve care and lives while creating the stories that inspire future giving. At St George’s, Amerjit ensured that the vision and governance of the charity enabled fundraised money to benefit the health and wellbeing of patients as well as the hospital workforce.

Amerjit has a strong passion for the NHS. As part of the NHS’ 70th birthday, Amerjit led a small consortium of NHS charities to deliver the “Big 7Tea campaign”, working in partnership with NHS England. As a result, over 4,000 tea parties were hosted across the country, with support from corporations such as ASDA, Barclays, and the Post Office. He went on to be one of the founders of what is now NHS Charities Together and has served on its Board since 2019.

On joining More, Amerjit said, “One of the most significant lessons I’ve learnt is the understanding that individuals contribute not only to a cause but also to the people behind it. At More, I’m looking forward to putting my experience in health charities into practice for the benefit of many more health organisations, and also learning from and supporting other sectors for whom fundraising is so critical.”

Maarten Vervaat, Managing Partner at More commented: “Over the past four years, we have supported many health organisations to start or expand their fundraising so that they can do more and better for the health of our communities. We are thrilled to now have the experience and expertise Amerjit brings, as a remarkable NHS charity CEO, fundraiser and trustee, to enhance our work with hospital and health charities, and beyond.”
