Moorfields Eye Hospital
Supporting the launch of a capital campaign for London’s renowned Moorfields Eye Hospital, one comparatively few hospitals in the UK to have an established professional fundraising programme
Moorfields Eye Hospital is a world-leading eye hospital with one main site in the centre of London and 19 others in and around the capital. It treats hundreds of thousands of patients a year. Much more than a hospital, it is also a major force in teaching the eye specialists of the future. And, with its key partner, UCL Institute of Ophthalmology, it has one of the strongest and most extensive ophthalmic research programmes in the world.
Moorfields had a comparatively young development department – and fundraising was certainly not its core business. Having decided to launch a major campaign, the hospital’s leaders and fundraisers needed an outside perspective from some experts with extensive experience.
2011 to 2015 (and ongoing)
Rob Aldous, Former Director of Fundraising and Development, says:
“The trouble is, there are lots of consultants out there… and very few that you can really have confidence in! We finally selected More Partnership based on price, personal recommendations, breadth of expertise and genuine experience as fundraising practitioners. In short, we needed someone we were sure would add value!
“And over nine months that’s exactly what Ian Edwards and the team did. There were broadly two stages to the feasibility study. First More Partnership set about engaging key people within the organisation and outside partners, culminating in crafting a draft case for support. Second they took the case for support out to existing and prospective donors and carried out in-depth interviews, before producing a final report.
“The whole thing was very insightful, not just as a feasibility study for the proposed campaign itself, but also in helping us evaluate the hospital’s strategic options. More Partnership helped us to see more clearly. So maybe fundraising isn’t so different from ophthalmology after all!”
What happened next
More Partnership continues to provide ongoing support for the Moorfields campaign.
